Human beings can understand their behaviour remarkably well and still repeat it.
You might know that eating the sugar isn't going to help.
You might recognise that you're overthinking again.
You might understand exactly how procrastination is affecting you.
You can have insight and still experience the same automatic response.
Human Change begins with a different question:
Instead of only asking why this is happening, how is this pattern happening within your experience?
Our experience involves many interacting processes - including what we pay attention to,
what we imagine, what we expect, what we associate with particular situations,
what we experience internally, how our body responds,
what we repeatedly do and how we see ourselves.
Applied Human Change gives you a structured way to actively work
with aspects of that internal experience.
Human Change isn't something that is simply done to you.
You participate.
I teach and guide you through a structured series of internal exercises designed around the pattern you want to change.
You might be asked to:
Notice something.
Direct your attention.
Use your imagination.
Become aware of an internal response.
Experiment with experiencing something differently.
Practise a different response.
Notice what changes.
Allow time for an experience to process.
Mentally rehearse how you want to respond in a future situation.
The particular exercises depend upon what we're working on.
There is no single exercise used for every person or every problem.
Your session is designed according to your individual pattern, your responses and the change you want to work toward.
What happens during the session can also respond to what you actually experience as we work.
This is one of the reasons a personalised Human Change session is different from simply listening to a recording or following a predetermined exercise.
My role is to provide the structure, instruction and guidance.
Your role is to actively participate in the exercises and notice your own experience.
I'll ask you questions about what you're noticing at relevant points so I can respond to what is actually happening and guide the process accordingly.
The process can respond to you.
You remain awake, aware and able to communicate with me throughout your session.
There is no particular response you have to produce and no "correct"
experience you are supposed to have.
You can ask questions, tell me what you're noticing, pause or decline an exercise.
Your internal experience remains your own.
I provide the guidance. You remain an active participant in the process.
Human Change isn't necessarily constant instruction.
At appropriate points, I may give you quiet time to notice what is occurring internally
before we continue.
Rather than immediately moving on to the next exercise, this gives you space
to experience and process what has just occurred.
The purpose isn't simply to have an interesting experience during an online session.
Where appropriate, I'll guide you through practising or mentally rehearsing how you want to respond when you encounter the relevant situation in everyday life.
Because ultimately, that's where change needs to become useful.
Human Change is about applying what you practise internally to the way you experience and respond to your life.
